John’s legal experience is diverse and varied. He enjoys the opportunity to practice in several areas of law. John’s practice focuses primarily in the areas of wills, trusts, estate planning and probate, trust administration, elder law, business law, civil litigation, and real estate law.


Prior to being a founding member of New Point Law Firm, John practiced at Pasley and Singer Law Firm, LLP, and as an attorney with the estate planning firm of Hargrove Madden near Chicago, Illinois. At Hargrove and Madden, John assisted his clients with wills, trusts, and estate planning.


During law school at DePaul, John served as an extern in the litigation department of a well-known environmental organization in the spring of 2011 and as a summer law clerk for a Chicago plaintiff’s personal injury firm during the summer of 2010. John is a pround graduate with Honors and Distinction of Iowa State University — Go Cyclones!

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

John is active in the Ames community. He and his wife, Sophia Magill, have been blessed with two children. An Ames native, John served on the City of Ames Planning and Zoning Commission from 2013 to 2016. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of The Ames Foundation from 2013 to 2019. John has prepared tax returns as a voluntary tax preparer for low-income tax filers and participated in river, prairie and wilderness area clean-ups. John currently spends his free time volunteering in activities involving his children, such as coaching their youth sports teams or serving as the Vice President of his children’s elementary school Parent-Teacher Organization for the 2024 to 2025 school year. John enjoys spending time in nature, traveling, playing golf and basketball with his friends and family, and spending as much quality time with his children and spouse as possible.
